Life of the Goddess Athena

  • Zeus, God of the Sky swallowed his first wife, Metis, fearing that she carried a son that would overthrow him. But, Metis did not carry the son that Zeus feared. She carried a daughter. Being immortal, she gave birth to Athena inside of Zeus. While making Athena’s armor, the pounding gave Zeus a headache so he had his best man, Hephaestus, slice his head open and from the slice, his daughter, Athena, emerged.
  • As a child, Athena had accidentally wounded her best friend, Pallas, daughter of Triton and titan god of war craft, while they were practicing their fighting skills. Sadly, the wound succumbed to infection, turned fatal and Pallas died.
  • Athena, the Goddess of war and many other crafts, often helped heroes in battle that were brave and courageous while in the face of danger. She helped Odysseus, king of Ithaca, kill the suitors that were persistent for the hand of the queen.
  • Athena, usually depicted as the Goddess of war, is also a diplomat and solves many situations before they turn violent. Her only goal, even though she is the Goddess of war, was to prevent violence. She once helped Odysseus to get rid of the suitors that invaded his home.
  • There were three virgin goddesses. Athena, goddess of war, was one of them. Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, was another and the last virgin goddess was Hestia. Hestia is the goddess of the home and hearth.
  • Athena helped Perseus in his slaying of Medusa, a gorgon who could turn men to stone with just a glance. She gave him the aegis, her father’s shield that she carries for him. Using the aegis as a mirror, Perseus slayed Medusa without turning to stone because her power did not work through mirrors. In return for helping him, Perseus gave Athena the head of Medusa to put upon the aegis. Athena helped him because Athena did not like Medusa because Medusa had once said that Athena was jealous of her beauty.
  • Athena aided Perseus by giving him her shield to look into while fighting Medusa. By looking at her reflection, Perseus did not turn to stone like all the other men had before him that had tried to kill the Gorgon, Medusa.
  • Arachne, who was nothing more than a mortal with excellent weaving skills, challenged Athena, saying that she could weave better than the Goddess of weaving herself. When Athena answered this challenge, she and Arachne competed. When Athena saw she was losing she made Arachne feel grief and she hung herself. Athena then turned Arachne into a spider.
  • While bathing with Chariclo, Athena was seen undressed by Chariclo’s son, Tiresias. Even though Tiresias did nothing indecent to Athena she robbed him of his vision. Soon after she blinded him, she gave him the gift of prophet vision. He later became the most popular prophet in all of Ancient Greece. He later died from drinking of the Tilphussa. Still through death, his shade provided a prophecy for Odysseus in the Land of the Dead.
  • Athena and Poseidon, the God of the Sea, fought over who would control a new piece of land, found within what is known as Greece. The Gods decided that whoever gave the best gift to the land would receive it. Poseidon brought up water from the Earth but the water was salty and useless to the people. Athena brought upon the land the olive tree. The tree gave the people wood, oil and food. Therefore the Gods gave her the land and named it Athens.
  • There were three virgin goddesses. Athena, goddess of war, was one of them. Artemis, the goddess of the hunt, was another and the last virgin goddess was Hestia. Hestia is the goddess of the home and hearth.

This is the aegis. It is Zeus' shield that Athena carried for him. It bears the head of Medusa.

I used the green color for the font because green is often liked to healing and Athena is known for helping and healing hurt heroes. The music I created has a sweet smooth main line for Athena's calm demeanor. The dark underlayment is for Athena's resolve in battle. The music shows both sides of Athena's personality in harmony.
